Salary benchmarking

Salary benchmarking for the maritime industry

Since 2005 Spinnaker has been providing reliable salary data for shipping employers, their boards and remuneration committees.

Over 150 shipping companies, including shipowners, operators, shipmanagers, oil companies, commodity groups, shipbrokers, classification societies, ship & port agents take part in Spinnaker’s annual salary surveys. In order to participate, companies must join one or both of our benchmarking associations, the Maritime HR Association for shore-based salaries, or the Seafarer Employers’ Association for seafarer wage cost reports. Spinnaker also produces biennial P&I salary survey reports.

P&I salary benchmarking

Spinnaker publishes a P&I Club Salary Survey Report every 2 years.

The report includes roles in claims, both legally qualified and non-qualified, underwriting and loss prevention from junior to director level, as well as roles in corporate services and the senior leadership team.

Alongside the benchmarking of base salaries, total compensation and bonuses, the report also includes analysis of common benefits such as pensions, healthcare, leave benefits and also pay review budget projections.

The last P&I Club salary survey took place in 2019 and included over 1,600 incumbents, enabling us to report more than 100 P&I roles in the UK, Greece, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Seafarer wage cost benchmarking

Spinnaker is your source for reliable wage cost benchmarking data for employers of seafarers. Crew cost data is analysed by nationality, rank and vessel type.

We collate, analyse and report daily crew-cost data – this includes leave pay and guaranteed overtime, rotation, and enables members to identify the cost of crewing a vessel.

Reports show market highs and lows, and P10 –P90 percentiles for comparison against each member’s data.

The following sectors are reported:

  • Container
  • General cargo
  • Car carrier
  • Ferry/RoRo/Ropax
  • Chemical tanker
  • Product tanker
  • LNG
  • LPG
  • Cruise
  • Bulk carrier
  • Crude tanker

All data is reported in anonymous aggregated format in order to preserve member confidentiality.

In order to be a part of our seafarer wage cost benchmarking, companies are required to join the Seafarer Employers’ Association, of which Spinnaker are secretariat.
