I just wanted to take a minute to say thankyou to Phil Parry, Liam Daly and the whole team for all the efforts over the last weeks with our Crewing Director search.
In the end we had a hard choice between two very good candidates but there were several that could have “done the job”.
Really appreciate the hard work and thoroughness of the search which has led to a great outcome.
I would like to thank Oliver Mason and the Spinnaker team for all their help and the personal touch that has made a stressful time so much easier, and more importantly, ensuring that any roles suggested where suitable and that I would fit into the culture.
Ollie has been a great help and mentor during the recruitment process.

Diversity & inclusion

Spinnaker has long been a champion of diversity and inclusion within the shipping industry. Managing Director of Spinnaker Executive Search, Teresa Peacock, is a Board Member of WISTA UK and sits on the All Party Parliamentary Group for Women and Work, in addition to the Women in Maritime Taskforce subgroup on recruitment. Spinnaker has also led significant research into the gender pay gap via our salary benchmarking.
Spinnaker also partners with Diversity & Ability (DnA) which supports cultural shifts in the workplace to allow everyone of all backgrounds and abilities to thrive.
In 2019 Spinnaker was awarded Maritime UK’s Diversity Award which reflected our work to promote diversity and inclusion via our leadership development programmes, at the annual Maritime HR conference and through our gender pay gap analysis for the industry.
Gender Pay
Since 6 April 2017 employers in Great Britain with more than 250 employees have been required by law to report the following four types of figures annually on their own website and to UK government:
- Gender pay gap (mean and median averages)
- Gender bonus gap (mean and median averages)
- Proportion of men and women receiving bonuses
- Proportion of men and women in each quartile of the organisation’s pay structure
The Maritime HR Association, of which Spinnaker is secretariat, began collecting gender data as part of the annual salary survey process in 2016 to gain an understanding of the gender pay gap within UK maritime, compare this to the UK as a whole and monitor gender diversity within the sector generally.

The OSCAR Campaign

The OSCAR campaign (The Ocean and Shipping Community Advancing Children’s Health and Research) is an innovative fundraising partnership uniting the international shipping community to raise funds at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH).
Background of the OSCAR campaign
The campaign is the inspiration of Phil Parry, Chairman of Spinnaker, whose son Oscar received life-saving care at GOSH. Oscar had leukaemia twice and endured three transplants before being cured by some pioneering research.
Since its inception in 2011, the OSCAR campaign raised over £2million, helping to refurbish vital facilities at the hospital, and funding pioneering research into childhood cancers and immune diseases at GOSH and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.
One of the biggest fundraisers for the OSCAR Campaign is the OSCAR Dragon Boat Race, held in London every September. Find out more here: https://www.gosh.org/get-involved/fundraising-events/oscar-dragon-boat-race/

“Thanks to a lot of great people in shipping, the OSCAR Campaign has raised more than £2 million to help advance the work of the leading children’s bone marrow transplant and cellular medicine experts.
The simplest way to describe what we fund is ‘lab bench to bedside’ medicine – treatments that weren’t available yesterday, which may save children’s lives today and go on to save more lives tomorrow from what we learn. That’s how Oscar himself was saved – the treatment pioneered on him is now routinely used to save others.
It’s incredible – we are now able to use patients’ own immune systems to target their cancers. It’s like taking off the cancer brakes and enabling patients’ cells to re-see the cancer. A new ‘OSCAR Research Fellow’ will develop this work. It needs to be rolled out for more diseases and constantly adapted to an evolving enemy.
OSCAR funds are crucial to this work. Without them, there would be no new research fellow and the Great Ormond Street BMT team’s ability to disseminate its work worldwide, train its team and learn from the work of others would be severely restricted.”

I have known Phil for nearly 20 years and have always found him to be a very knowledgeable and professional individual. I have appointed him as a solicitor, benefited from his input as a business partner and valued him as a friend. I would have no hesitation in recommending him in any business capacity
