I would like to thank Oliver Mason and the Spinnaker team for all their help and the personal touch that has made a stressful time so much easier, and more importantly, ensuring that any roles suggested where suitable and that I would fit into the culture.

The OSCAR Dragon Boat Race

The OSCAR Dragon Boat Race

11 September
London Docklands

Join Spinnaker, hosts of the 7th annual OSCAR Dragon Boat Race 2020.

The OSCAR Campaign has reached over £2million for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH). The OSCAR Campaign’s namesake is Oscar Parry, son of Phil Parry, Spinnaker’s Chairman. Oscar was treated for two types of leukaemia from age 3 to age 8. He had two bone marrow transplants – the second trialling an entirely new theory, experimental stem cell transplant, 5 brain haemorrhages. Now 20, Oscar is a living example of the value of bench-to-bedside research and treatment.

The teams for the 2019 Race were: Spinnaker, Hill Dickinson, Swire Bulk, BDO LLP, LISCR, C Solutions, North P&I, Britannia P&I, CJC, Borealis Maritime, Shipowners Club, Thomas Miller, Union Maritime, Lomar Shipping, Golar LNG, A.M.Nomikos, Lloyds Register, Ince, IG Group, Beazley, Baltic Exchange, MSC Cruises.

We already have teams signed up for this year’s race – would you like to be involved? Here’s how:

1 Get a team together. You need ten rowers and drummer to keep everyone in time. No training needed! You don’t even have to have set foot in a boat before. The up-front cost is £500 to register, plus a pledge to raise £5,000 in sponsorship
2 Sponsor the event. There are many opportunities to get your company’s brand seen by over 400 shipping people. From banners welcoming everyone at the venue to sponsoring the drinks, food, live band and boat flags, we have plenty of options.
3 Come along for the party! There’s a bar, barbecue, live music, and a great atmosphere – so it’s a fun day out even if you’re not on the water. All we ask for is a donation to Great Ormond Street Hospital, payable on the day.

Find out more about all these options by emailing Lauren Thipthorpe at oscar@spinnaker-global.com or on +44 (0)1702 480142.

Salary benchmarking

We provide the most comprehensive and reliable worldwide annual survey of shore-based and seagoing salaries.

Diversity & inclusion

Spinnaker has long been a champion of diversity and inclusion within the shipping industry. Managing Director Teresa Peacock is Membership Secretary of WISTA UK and sits on the All Party Parliamentary Group for Women and Work, in addition to the Women in Maritime Taskforce subgroup on recruitment. Karen Waltham, Managing Director, chairs the Total Reward workstream of the Women in Maritime Taskforce and has led significant research into the gender pay gap via our salary benchmarking.

Spinnaker also partners with Diversity & Ability (DnA) which supports cultural shifts in the workplace to allow everyone of all backgrounds and abilities to thrive.

In 2019 Spinnaker was awarded Maritime UK’s Diversity Award which reflected our work to promote diversity and inclusion via our leadership development programmes, at the annual Maritime HR conference and through our gender pay gap analysis for the industry.

Gender Pay

Since 6 April 2017 employers in Great Britain with more than 250 employees have been required by law to report the following four types of figures annually on their own website and to UK government:

  • Gender pay gap (mean and median averages)
  • Gender bonus gap (mean and median averages)
  • Proportion of men and women receiving bonuses
  • Proportion of men and women in each quartile of the organisation’s pay structure

The Maritime HR Association, of which Spinnaker is secretariat, began collecting gender data as part of the annual salary survey process in 2016 to gain an understanding of the gender pay gap within UK maritime, compare this to the UK as a whole and monitor gender diversity within the sector generally.

The OSCAR Campaign

Oscar Parry, front centre, with team members at the annual OSCAR Dragon Boat Race

The OSCAR campaign (The Ocean and Shipping Community Advancing Children’s Health and Research) is an innovative fundraising partnership uniting the international shipping community to raise funds at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH).

Background of the OSCAR campaign
The campaign is the inspiration of Phil Parry, Chairman of Spinnaker, whose son Oscar received life-saving care at GOSH. Oscar had leukaemia twice and endured three transplants before being cured by some pioneering research.

Since its inception in 2011, the OSCAR campaign raised over £2million, helping to refurbish vital facilities at the hospital, and funding pioneering research into childhood cancers and immune diseases at GOSH and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.

One of the biggest fundraisers for the OSCAR Campaign is the OSCAR Dragon Boat Race, held in London every September. Find out more here: https://spinnaker-global.com/charity

Phil Parry, Chairman, Spinnaker

“Thanks to a lot of great people in shipping, the OSCAR Campaign has raised more than £2 million to help advance the work of the leading children’s bone marrow transplant and cellular medicine experts.

The simplest way to describe what we fund is ‘lab bench to bedside’ medicine – treatments that weren’t available yesterday, which may save children’s lives today and go on to save more lives tomorrow from what we learn. That’s how Oscar himself was saved – the treatment pioneered on him is now routinely used to save others.

It’s incredible – we are now able to use patients’ own immune systems to target their cancers. It’s like taking off the cancer brakes and enabling patients’ cells to re-see the cancer. A new ‘OSCAR Research Fellow’ will develop this work. It needs to be rolled out for more diseases and constantly adapted to an evolving enemy.

OSCAR funds are crucial to this work. Without them, there would be no new research fellow and the Great Ormond Street BMT team’s ability to disseminate its work worldwide, train its team and learn from the work of others would be severely restricted.”

Phil Parry, OSCAR Chair

Julie Lithgow OBE

Spinnaker has put more people in the right jobs than anyone else I know. They take the time to engage with his clients, helping them understand their vision and their ambitions. From this solid understanding comes an ability to recommend the right candidates to their clients. Understanding the nuances within the shipping industry and speaking our language, not to mention the highly successful benchmarking project has given them a platform from which to advise and support a wide range of clients. I would recommend Phil Parry as a recruiter, as mentor and with Spinnaker as an essential partner in finding the right people for your company.
