Senior Vessel Operator (Tankers) – Spain

Location: Spain
Level: Mid to Senior | 5–7 years’ experience
Sector: Tankers
Basis: Permanent, full-time

A well-capitalised, fast-growing tanker owner and freight trader is looking for an experienced Vessel Operator to join its spot desk in Spain.

The company owns and operates a fleet of MRs, Handys, and LR2s, with a significant newbuild programme underway and further second-hand acquisitions planned throughout the year. Fleet size is set to grow substantially over the next 12 months. Alongside its owned tonnage, the business actively charters in vessels on both spot and TC to cover cargo commitments, so the operational and commercial sides of the desk sit close together.

The role
You’ll be operating vessels on the spot side of the business, covering cargoes from 5,000 to 130,000 tonnes of fuel oil and products across a wide range of trade routes. This isn’t a pure execution role. You’ll be sitting alongside cargo traders and feeding directly into commercial decisions: whether to lift on own tonnage or charter in, whether spot or TC makes more sense, and how the forward market looks. Rate grids, CP compliance, and counterparty management are all part of the day-to-day.

There’s an existing ops team in place, so you’re not starting from nothing. That said, the company is growing quickly and the expectation is that everyone contributes and gets stuck in.

Travel is built into the role. Industry events, counterparty visits, and regular time across the group’s other offices are all expected. The culture is relaxed but demanding, and the entertainment and relationship-building side of the job is taken seriously.

What they’re looking for

  • 5+ years experience in tanker vessel operations
  • Spot market background, comfortable with pace and volume
  • CPP or DPP experience both considered
  • Confident managing CP compliance and counterparty relationships
  • Sociable, happy to travel, and genuinely interested in the commercial side of the business
  • Spanish language skills useful given the office environment, but not essential

This is a confidential search. The client’s name will be shared at the appropriate stage of the process.
