As part of our 30 Under 30 initiative, we’re celebrating the next generation of leaders shaping the future of the maritime industry. Next up is Amelia Dunn, Trainee Account Executive at ITIC, and a standout emerging talent building an impressive career within the highly technical world of marine professional indemnity insurance.

Amelia supports ITIC’s underwriting and claims functions for marine professionals around the world, working across contract analysis, renewals, member exposures, and claims. Despite being at trainee level, she has quickly earned significant responsibility, becoming a trusted point of contact for clear and accurate contract analysis while supporting informed underwriting decisions and the effective progression of claims.

Over the past 12 months, Amelia’s responsibilities have grown considerably. She now manages more than 320 accounts, the third-highest portfolio within ITIC, while also handling over 50 active claims. As her experience has developed, she has deliberately sought exposure to increasingly complex areas of the maritime industry, including the offshore sector, strengthening her understanding of higher-risk operations, intricate company structures, liability, and policy cover.

What sets Amelia apart is the speed at which she has developed her technical knowledge and professional judgement. Her analytical approach to contract reviews enables her to identify potential liabilities and exposures and translate complex information into clear, practical insight. This has earned recognition from both colleagues and brokers, while her work has also helped improve internal processes around exposure summaries and underwriting reasoning.

Alongside a demanding workload, Amelia has made professional development a priority. She has completed four Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers professional qualifying examinations and is now more than halfway towards eligibility for membership, with plans to complete her remaining examinations within the next year. She has also actively broadened her understanding of the wider industry through networking, career events, and outreach, representing ITIC and introducing students and early-career professionals to the role marine insurance plays in global trade.

Her route into the industry makes that progress particularly impressive. Before entering marine insurance, Amelia worked in watersports, teaching sailing, windsurfing, and powerboating. Moving from a practical maritime environment into the complex world of professional indemnity insurance required her to quickly develop expertise in areas including contracts, liability, and underwriting, while adapting to an entirely different professional setting.

Since making that transition, Amelia has continued to push herself beyond her comfort zone. From stepping up during periods of change within her team to representing ITIC independently on international business trips, she has developed the confidence to trust her own judgement, build meaningful industry relationships, and contribute to new business opportunities.

Amelia’s journey demonstrates the value of bringing different experiences and perspectives into maritime. Her rapid technical development, growing responsibility, and willingness to keep challenging herself have already established her as a trusted member of the team and an exciting emerging talent within marine insurance.
