So many more children now survive leukaemia than don't. Thankfully, after 5 years of treatment, my son Oscar was one of the lucky ones.
But they don't all make it.
With your support, the medical teams at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children are working on groundbreaking new research projects which aim to develop treatments for the children we still can’t save. Oscar was saved by just this kind of experimental new treatment.
Every September, Spinnaker host 30 shipping teams messing about on the water at the OSCAR Dragon Boat Race in London Docklands to help raise funds to support this vital work.
One of the current challenges is to find out why the new CAR-T cell therapy which has saved the lives of so many children with otherwise incurable acute lymphoblastic leukaemia doesn't work in about half of the children who then relapse. By solving that problem we can save those children.
Lots of children are diagnosed with incurable conditions. It is only because of individual medical professionals, who dedicate themselves to researching these niche illnesses, that these children have any chance of survival.
Funding for childhood illness and research is surprisingly limited, meaning that progress relies heavily on charitable giving.
What has changed in recent years is the speed at which new theories can be tested on living patients. So what the OSCAR Campaign has been funding and will fund again in the future is what’s known as bench-to-bedside treatment. This approach gives children with no other hope access to expert doctors who are willing to trial experimental treatments. Many of these treatments have proven successful and, in Oscar’s case, have gone on to be developed further, saving the lives of countless other children.
You have signed up. Now what? Below are some instructions to set up your JustGiving Page. These make sure you are linked to the main GOSH event so everyone can keep track of how the fundraising efforts are going, help spur on a little bit of competition and help us and GOSH keep track of the total amount raised.
Feel free to use any of the pictures to the right or any pictures of videos from our albums to share on your JustGiving Page.
On our Flickr we have all the albums from all Dragon Boat Races dating back to the very first in 2014! Below you will find the most recent of resources. Photos, videos as well as shorter videos suitable for Instagram, LinkedIn or any other social media you may use.
By signing up to the OSCAR DragonBoat Race you pledged to raise £6,500. In the last few years we have had one company that has really raised the bar, raising over £800,000 in 2 years. Last year we also introduced the Fundraiser Award for the top fundraiser, so get those competition hats on, it is all to play for!
In case you were struggling with inspiration, here are some fundraising ideas that could help your efforts.

We love this event. The whole office gets behind it and looks forward to taking part every year. It’s good for shipping. It’s good for London. And it has made a difference by funding the development of new treatments and techniques that are already in use.
