Oscar's Story

So many more children now survive leukaemia than don't.  Thankfully, after 5 years of treatment, my son Oscar was one of the lucky ones.

But they don't all make it.

With your support, the medical teams at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children are working on groundbreaking new research projects which aim to develop treatments for the children we still can’t save. Oscar was saved by just this kind of experimental new treatment.

Every September, Spinnaker host 30 shipping teams messing about on the water at the OSCAR Dragon Boat Race in London Docklands to help raise funds to support this vital work.

One of the current challenges is to find out why the new CAR-T cell therapy which has saved the lives of so many children with otherwise incurable acute lymphoblastic leukaemia doesn't work in about half of the children who then relapse. By solving that problem we can save those children.

Setting up your JustGiving

You have signed up. Now what? Below are some instructions to set up your JustGiving Page. These make sure you are linked to the main GOSH event so everyone can keep track of how the fundraising efforts are going, help spur on a little bit of competition and help us and GOSH keep track of the total amount raised.

Feel free to use any of the pictures to the right or any pictures of videos from our albums to share on your JustGiving Page.

Photos & Videos

On our Flickr we have all the albums from all Dragon Boat Races dating back to the very first in 2014! Below you will find the most recent of resources. Photos, videos as well as shorter videos suitable for Instagram, LinkedIn or any other social media you may use.

Fundraising Tips

By signing up to the OSCAR DragonBoat Race you pledged to raise £6,500. In the last few years we have had one company that has really raised the bar, raising over £800,000 in 2 years. Last year we also introduced the Fundraiser Award for the top fundraiser, so get those competition hats on, it is all to play for!

In case you were struggling with inspiration, here are some fundraising ideas that could help your efforts.

  • Don't forget the power of social media
  • Speak to friends, familes and neighbours
  • Have a fancy dress day at work
  • Organise an auction
  • Host a quiz night
  • Have a bake sale
  • Pester your clients for sponsorship
  • Have a sponsored silence or walk

Important Information

Before the big day, there are a few things you should know.

  • Bring 20p's, the lockers require 20p for access
  • Showers are available at the venue, so do not worry if you need to shower after a race
  • Bring a towel, some dry clothes and a change of socks and shoes, it can get quite splashy in the boats
  • Remember a jumper for later on in the evening

Training

Training

Almost nobody trains. Most teams turn up and just have fun. Some even turn up after a big lunch!

Rowers

The boat consists of 10 rowers and 1 drummer but, if you don’t quite have enough team members, we always have plenty of extra volunteers on the day to make up numbers.

We are all totally inspired by the fundraising result of the event and we will build our support next year to keep reaching higher on the fundraising scoreboard! Of course, even though it’s light-hearted, we’re over the moon to have come first in the final.
