Assistant Underwriter – London

A specialist marine MGA is seeking an Assistant Underwriter to join its London-based underwriting team, supporting a niche portfolio across Hull and War risks.
This is a hands-on underwriting role within a lean, high-performing team, offering direct exposure to decision-making and the opportunity to step into underwriting authority in the near term.
The position is suited to a commercially minded insurance professional who can operate with a degree of independence and is looking to accelerate their underwriting career.
Key Responsibilities

• Support the underwriting and management of a Hull & War portfolio
• Assist in quoting, negotiating, and binding risks within agreed parameters
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and market counterparties
• Contribute to portfolio analysis, performance tracking, and strategy execution
• Ensure accurate documentation and adherence to contract certainty standards
• Maintain underwriting data and exposure records across internal systems
• Work closely with senior underwriters to support business development activity

Requirements

• 4+ years’ experience within the insurance market (broking or underwriting)
• Exposure to marine insurance, ideally Hull, War, or P&I-related risks
• Strong understanding of London market practices and processes
• Commercial mindset with the ability to assess and communicate risk
• Confident dealing with brokers and external stakeholders
• Ability to work with a high level of autonomy in a lean team environment
• Progress towards (or interest in) professional qualifications (e.g. CII)
