A leading international shipping organisation is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to join its tanker fleet team in London. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded maritime professional to take ownership of a portfolio of 8-9 vessels, managing day-to-day marine and commercial operations within a high-performing fleet environment.
You will work alongside three other Operations Managers covering the wider tanker fleet, with responsibility for ensuring safe, efficient and profitable vessel operations while delivering first-class service to internal and external stakeholders.
The Role
This is a broad and hands-on position combining both marine operations and commercial performance management. You will act as the key point of contact for your assigned vessels, liaising closely with Masters, charterers, agents, terminals and internal departments.
The successful candidate will be empowered to run their vessels independently, making operational decisions that optimise voyage results, maintain compliance and minimise delays or off-hire time.
Key ResponsibilitiesMarine Operations
- Oversee the safe and efficient operation of 8-9 tanker vessels.
- Support Masters and onboard teams with voyage execution, navigation, cargo operations and tank cleaning requirements.
- Ensure compliance with company procedures, charter party obligations and international regulations.
- Attend vessels when required and support incident investigations or emergency response activity.
- Promote a strong safety culture across the fleet.
Commercial & Voyage Performance
- Optimise routes, bunker planning and port turnaround times to maximise voyage performance.
- Monitor bunker consumption and operating costs.
- Review freight and hire calculations/invoices.
- Appoint and negotiate with agents where required.
- Work proactively to reduce delays, minimise off-hire and improve overall earnings.
Stakeholder Management
- Maintain regular communication with charterers, brokers, agents, terminals and internal departments including technical, crewing, safety and commercial teams.
- Provide timely voyage updates, reports and operational guidance to all stakeholders.
Candidate Profile
We are keen to hear from candidates with:
- 2-3 years’ shore-based tanker operations experience (or more).
- Ideally a combination of sea-going and shore-based experience.
- Strong understanding of tanker operations, cargo handling, charter parties and voyage optimisation.
- Good commercial awareness with the ability to balance operational and financial performance.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong problem-solving ability and confidence working independently.
- Ability to prioritise and manage multiple vessels in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexible approach and willingness to respond outside normal office hours when required.
