Are you an experienced Marine Engineer with a passion for developing the next generation of engineering officers?
We are seeking an experienced Senior Marine Engineering Instructor / Assessor to deliver world-class maritime engineering training and lead the development of engineering competency across our organisation. This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for delivering high-quality, competency-based training while ensuring compliance with STCW, NMSA and international maritime standards.
Working within our Marine Training Centre, you will play a key role in improving engineering capability, maintaining accreditation, and ensuring our seafarers are equipped to operate safely, efficiently, and professionally.
About the Role
Reporting to the Senior Marine Training Centre Manager, you will deliver engineering training through classroom instruction, simulator-based learning and practical workshops while leading curriculum development, quality assurance and regulatory compliance across all engineering programmes.
You will also act as the organisation’s engineering training authority, supporting fleet performance through competency development, incident analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities Training Delivery
- Deliver STCW-compliant engineering courses for Engine Officers and Ratings.
- Facilitate classroom, workshop and Engine Room Simulator (ERS) training.
- Deliver courses covering:
- Marine Engineering
- Auxiliary Machinery
- Electrical & Control Systems
- Engine Room Resource Management (ERM)
- Maintenance & Repair
- Watchkeeping
- Assess student competency using approved assessment methods.
- Provide coaching, mentoring and constructive feedback to cadets and serving officers.
- Maintain accurate training records and assessment documentation.
- Ensure all training is delivered safely and in accordance with approved procedures.
Curriculum Development & Quality
- Develop and maintain lesson plans, presentations, assessments and simulator scenarios.
- Ensure training materials reflect current STCW requirements, IMO Model Courses and NMSA standards.
- Lead engineering simulator scenario development.
- Participate in course validation, accreditation and internal quality assurance.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of training programmes.
Engineering Leadership
- Lead the development of engineering competency pathways across the organisation.
- Identify engineering competency gaps using fleet performance data and incident investigations.
- Participate as a technical advisor in engineering incident investigations.
- Support engineering competency revalidation programmes.
- Maintain engineering compliance frameworks for STCW A-III/1 and A-III/2.
Compliance & Accreditation
- Ensure engineering training remains audit-ready at all times.
- Act as the technical liaison with NMSA on engineering training matters.
- Lead engineering accreditation activities.
- Maintain instructor competency and continuing professional development.
- Ensure all assessment records and certification documentation meet audit requirements.
Safety & Professional Standards
- Promote a strong safety culture.
- Conduct pre-training risk assessments and simulator checks.
- Maintain current maritime qualifications and instructional competency.
- Support research, professional networks and continuous improvement initiatives.
What You’ll Bring Essential Qualifications
- STCW III/2 Certificate of Competency (Second Engineer or higher – Motor, Foreign Going).
- Eligible for NMSA recognition.
- Qualified Maritime Assessor/Examiner.
- Recognised industry assessor credentials (such as IAMI Assessor status or equivalent).
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ sea service in a management engineering role aboard motor vessels operating on HFO/MDO/MGO.
- Previous experience as a maritime instructor or assessor.
- Strong knowledge of IMO Model Courses.
- Experience with:
- Engine Room Simulators (ERS)
- Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS)
- Auxiliary machinery
- Fuel treatment systems
- Automation and control systems
- MARPOL Annex VI compliance
