Senior Vessel Operator (Tankers) – Athens

Location: Athens
Level: 5+ years’ experience
Sector: Tankers
Basis: Permanent, full-time

A well-capitalised tanker owner is hiring an experienced TC Operator to lead its Athens operations desk. The company owns and operates a fleet of MRs, Handys, and LR2s, with four more MRs and an LR2 delivering imminently and further acquisitions planned throughout the year. A newbuild programme of additional LR2s and Handys is also underway. Fleet size is currently around 60 vessels and expected to push 80 by year-end.

The Athens office is newly established and purpose-built for the operations team. This is a senior hire into a small setup, with a junior operator coming in alongside you.

The role
The immediate priority is operating MRs and LR2s fixed on five to six year time charters to a major oil company counterparty. These are direct relationships with no broker involvement, so the quality of your counterparty management matters from day one.

The work is TC-focused: CP compliance, vessel monitoring, laytime, counterparty communications, and keeping a clean operation across a fleet that’s growing quickly. IMOS is the system in use and familiarity with it is important – the expectation is that you’re operational within the first week.

Alongside the day-to-day, you’ll be the senior presence in the Athens office and the reference point for the junior operator coming in beneath you. The head of OPS sits in Athens as well, so you’re not isolated, but you do need to be someone who can hit the ground running without hand-holding.

Travel is built in. Counterparty visits, industry events, and time across the group’s other offices are all expected. The company moves its people around deliberately and wants operators who engage with the business beyond their immediate desk.

What they’re looking for

  • Ideally 5+ years tanker operations experience, TC side preferred
  • IMOS experience, ideally with the ability to be fully operational quickly
  • Strong CP and counterparty management background
  • Sea time an advantage, though experienced shore-side operators will absolutely be considered
  • Greek nationals or Athens-based candidates preferred given the office location, though strong candidates from elsewhere are welcome
  • Confident working in a lean team during a period of rapid fleet growth
  • Someone who wants early responsibility and is comfortable with the pace that comes with it

The setup
The technical management of the fleet sits with a dedicated technical manager in Athens in which the company holds a stake, so you’re operating within an established support structure. That said, this is a build-out and everyone is expected to contribute to how the desk takes shape, not just fill a predefined seat.

Compensation is competitive and in line with what you’d expect from a serious tanker owner. Salary expectations will be discussed once there’s a mutual fit.

This is a confidential search. The client’s name will be shared at the appropriate stage of the process.
