Senior Vessel Operator (Chemical Tankers) – London

We are working with an international shipowner and operator looking to appoint a Senior Vessel Operator to its London team, with a particular focus on chemical tankers.

This is a hands-on commercial operations position overseeing owned chemical tonnage across both spot and period charter structures. The successful candidate will need strong shore-based chemical tanker experience and the technical understanding to manage complex cargoes, tank preparation, segregation and vessel suitability.

The role

You will take responsibility for the day-to-day commercial operation of chemical tankers, working closely with Chartering, Marine Operations, vessels, agents and counterparties.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing voyages from fixture through to completion, including voyage orders, agency appointments and charter party compliance
  • Reviewing cargo nominations and confirming vessel suitability for intended chemical cargoes
  • Assessing cargo compatibility, segregation requirements, tank allocation and stowage plans
  • Coordinating tank cleaning plans, wall wash requirements, heating instructions, coating restrictions and cargo changeovers
  • Working directly with Masters on cargo planning and chemical tanker operational requirements
  • Optimising cargo intake and assisting Chartering with time-critical pre-fixture matters
  • Coordinating bunker planning from both a cost and operational perspective
  • Managing Letters of Indemnity where voyage requirements deviate from charter party terms
  • Raising freight invoices through IMOS VMS
  • Supporting voyage-related claims including shifting costs, additional port calls, speed-up costs and other recoverable items
  • Maintaining accurate voyage information and ensuring operational issues are escalated appropriately

What we’re looking for

You should have a proven background in shore-based chemical tanker operations, ideally with at least five years’ relevant experience.

You will need strong commercial judgement alongside detailed knowledge of the operational requirements involved in carrying chemical cargoes.

Experience or knowledge across the following would be particularly relevant:

  • MarineLINE and stainless-steel chemical tankers
  • Multi-grade parcel tankers
  • Cargo compatibility and segregation
  • Tank cleaning and wall wash requirements
  • Tank coatings and coating restrictions
  • Heating and inhibitor requirements
  • IBC Code and MARPOL Annex II
  • USCG compatibility requirements
  • Milbros or similar chemical cargo compatibility systems
  • IMOS or another established voyage management system

Previous seagoing experience as Chief Officer or Master on chemical tankers would be advantageous but is not essential.

Exposure to cargoes such as methanol, ethanol, caustic soda, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, styrene monomer, base oils, vegetable oils and glycols would also be useful.

The setup

This is a senior, autonomous position within an international Commercial Operations function. You will be expected to manage routine operational matters independently once established in the role, while working closely with colleagues across Chartering, Marine Operations and the wider business.
