There are two types of finance functions in the maritime sector, marine finance and corporate finance. Marine finance, which includes responsibilities in relation to vessels and voyages such as time charter hire, freight billing & collection, demurrage collection and marine accounting.
Corporate finance is more traditional, and the type of finance found in any organisation outside of the maritime industry. This function is responsible for the company’s finances such as credit control & cash management, financial reporting, audit, taxation and treasury.
The main difference between finance and accounting is the former is the management of assets and liabilities and the planning of future growth, whilst the latter is managing the day-to-day flow of money in and out of the business.

The role of Financial Controller in the maritime sector is to oversee financial operations, ensure regulatory compliance, maintain financial controls to manage risk and protect company assets, advise management on an organisation’s financial strategy and deliver relevant industry insights.
