THE golden handcuffs are melting away but what are employers going to do about pay rises in 2010? At the moment many simply don’t know and are casting around to find out what others are doing. 

The general consensus is that continued pay restraint is a wise move and that most staff will understand the need for it, especially as we don’t really know what the shipping market’s fortunes will be this year. 

HR Managers are telling us though that they will apply a company-wide budget but will allocate a higher proportion of it, as a retention tool, to their best performers.
