BROWN ENVELOPES

There has been some concern about the advent of the Bribery Act in the UK, not least because people have not been sure how the whole thing is going to work in practice.

As is usually the case with new bits of legislation, the detail has been less than forthcoming. As the cricket season is upon us, what happens if you take your client to the Oval? Given the prices of tickets for next year's Olympics, can you safely invite someone to the final of the men's 100m? Are lap dancers a legitimate expense (were they ever)? Perhaps we should be told.

New guidance has been released suggesting that bona vide promotional, hospitality and other business expenditure is ok. Facilitation payments are out. Clear?
