MARKET COMMENTARY – MAY/JUNE 2010

WHAT a tumultuous time we've all been having! Volcanic ash, air strikes, riots in Greece, the Euro Zone bailout, a hung parliament in the UK and the sad passing of two figures from the University of Plymouth maritime scene. Professor David Moreby and, tragically, Nina Jones, who graduated in 1994 and who leaves behind three young children. May they both rest in peace.

Life goes on of course for the rest of us and here in the happy land of maritime recruitment, the market is 9 months into its renewed high after the shaky year that went before. You only need to take a look at shippingjobs.com to see that the even spread of vacancies across chartering, freight trading, broking, shipmanagement, law and P&I indicate a steady and less fragmented market than a year ago. Many shipmanagers in particular have reported that 2009 and 2010 have worked out very nicely for them thank you very much as their larger cash-rich clients have taken the opportunity to buy up well-priced tonnage and so expand their fleets under management. One man's loss is another man's gain!

So, there are many in the shipmanagement community hungry for talent in all the major centres including Glasgow, Singapore and Dubai. If you're a superintendent or a senior officer looking to come ashore, give Spinnaker's Technical Division a call on +44 (0)1702 481630 or drop them a line on [email protected].

And if you haven´t invited us to your Posidonia party yet, hurry before it´s too late!! Well, if you don´t ask….
