OSCAR CAMPAIGN UPDATE

AS we reported last month, the shipping industry is rallying behind an inspirational new shipping industry campaign to raise funds for the redevelopment of part of the world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH).

Supported by some of the biggest names in the industry, the OSCAR Campaign (The Ocean and Shipping Community Advancing Children's Health and Research) has raised more than £120,000 in less than two months.

OSCAR has won the support of INTERTANKO at its General Meeting conference in Athens and the Baltic Exchange at the Annual Chairman's Cocktail Reception in London.

Thanks to INTERTANKO AND The Baltic Exchange and also to the various shipping luminaries who together own The Henry Root restaurant in Chelsea, an increasingly popular shipping hang-out. They held a Spanish wine tasting evening in May to raise awareness of OSCAR (and not a small amount of cash too). Held on Norwegian National Day, a good smattering of the tanker industry's leading lights were heard having trouble with some of the tougher Spanish pronunciations but they didn't let that stop them putting their hands in their pockets further evidence that we in shipping are not a bad bunch after all!
