LONDON is preparing to host one of the shipping events of the year: the 2009 conference of the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association.
WISTA, led by international president Marita Scott, is going from strength to strength. Spinnaker Consulting employs several WISTA members and we support its role in maritime career development, fostering industry expertise, and networking.
It’s also shown our Chairman what it feels like to be a woman in a man’s world. When he spoke at WISTA’s Denmar event a couple of years ago, he suddenly understood what it’s like to be the odd one out. Apparently the ball at the end of the week was a “fabulous but terrifying event.”
It is a special year for WISTA, being its Coral anniversary. What began 35 years ago as a Christmas get-together of a few women in the London market has evolved into an international network with well over 1,000 members in 23 countries.
The latest affiliated association to be formed is in Hong Kong, and a West Coast chapter has been added to an impressive list of branches of WISTA-USA.
This international conference, with the theme
“DIRECTION:Diversity. ROUTE:Corporate Social Responsibility.”
will be held at the IMO Building in London from September 16 to 18.
A line up of impressive speakers will address the gathering and there will be a special half day session on piracy.
The social scene will include a reception at the House of Lords, a medieval banquet, networking breakfasts and WISTA’s gala dinner to round off an exciting three days.
Visits to London’s financial, insurance and maritime institutions will be enjoyed by delegates, expected to number around 300.
