In some of the less, shall we say, salubrious parts of the world, people dispose of their old refrigerators by leaving them in their front gardens, or even in the street. I wonder, are we about to see the maritime equivalent of fly-tipping?
High fuel costs, older less efficient ships and competition from carriers like Maersk who have ordered 34 containerships with reefer-capacity equivalent to 48 large reefers, are all combining to sound some very big warning bells for reefer operators.
Maersk’s 7450 teu vessels will have reefer plugs for 1700 refrigerated containers. Blimey! That’s a lot of chicken.
