The importance of networking in shipping

As you know, at Spinnaker we have been immersed in the maritime industry for almost 20 years recruiting for any shore-based maritime role imaginable from Graduate to Director level. As such, we have attended many conferences and exhibitions, however, for the first time ever our consultants will be attending the Multimodal logistics conference in Birmingham 10-12 May as we research the wider logistics and supply chain market.

We are all excited to learn about this wider industry and interested to find out how we can add value within the industry. We look forward to meeting you and learning about your companies.

Visit multimodal.org.uk/ to find out more, or email Alice Wilson at [email protected] to organise a meeting.

Also, as many people will attest, in the shipping industry we love any opportunity to simply socialise. Particularly if there is food and booze involved.

As such, there are numerous networking events carving out their own niche be it in what they offer or who they target. To name a few of my favourites, we have: the WISTA Wednesday drinks, SPNL, Fixture, Propeller Club and the Baltic Exchange (more about these guys in a bit). And there are the less frequent but no less enjoyable dates on the calendar such as exhibitions and events like Multimodal, and, not one to miss the opportunity for a little self-promotion, our very own annual Maritime HR Association Conference; https://hrc.spinnaker-global.com/conference along with the fantastic charitable events hosted by both Sailors' Society and our own Chairman’s OSCAR charity for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

One of my favourite networks is the Baltic Exchange and the YBA. Not only do they offer events to suit anyone's tastes (go karting, wine tasting, sailing, rugby and of course YBA's summer boat party to name but a few) they also provide interestingly presented market information in a variety of forms. I admit that I am a regular at many of their events (although not the rugby as my hand eye co-ordination would do nothing but hamper the talented bunch) and enjoy everything that I have experienced. Last year I attended the Chairman’s Cocktail party where approximately 600 maritime professionals from around the globe and differing backgrounds crowded together in Christ Church of Spitalfields for a fantastic night of laughs, friendship and drinks. It was one of my personal highlights of the shipping calendar and I hope to see you all at the Cocktail Party on 11 May!
