MARKET COMMENTARY – AUGUST 2012

As the northern hemisphere starts to cool and those in the south start to pepper their conversations with “how’s the weather up there”, we at Spinnaker start to count our pennies as another business year draws to a close.

A strong second half has more than made up for a weak first half. We’re not sure why. Frankly, we’ve almost given up trying to explain the highs and the lows, but one thing is unquestionable and that is that sentiment is still the name of the game, certainly as far as recruitment of charterers, shipbrokers and operators is concerned. There is incredible correlation between the number of commercial vacancies Spinnaker receives and freight rates. Rates up, vacancies up. Rates down, vacancies down. It’s obvious really, but it’s uncanny how close it is.

Read this month's Changing Course or search our blog for huge news about the Maritime Labour Convention, how the US is actually reviewing whether double hulls were a good idea after all, how you can be a happier you, and believe it or not, for proof that Tradewinds' editor just got even sexier. Incredible? You bet.
