Peter Rowat and Jon Freestone represented the Anchorites on a tour of GOSH and a handover of funds raised from 2017 Anchorites dinners. Peter was 2017 President and nominated the OSCAR Campaign as his charity of the year.
The OSCAR campaign (The Ocean and Shipping Community Advancing Children's Health and Research) is an innovative fundraising partnership uniting the international shipping community to raise funds at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH). It was founded and named after my son Oscar, who received life-saving care at GOSH from a very young age. Oscar is now 18, thanks to the pioneering research GOSH carries out.
We had a tour of the hospital and particularly of the Bone Marrow Transplant unit where Oscar was treated, hosted by Persis Amrolia, one of the consultants who treated Oscar and who currently leads two major clinical trials using immune cells to prevent infections and leukaemic relapse after stem cell transplants. This is one of the areas of research that has been funded by the OSCAR Campaign.
Read about CAR-T cell developments here – the use of gene-edited immune cells to target leukaemia.
