IT was with great sadness that we learned of the death of our good friend Fred Doll, owner and MD of Doll Shipping Consultancy. Fred was one of the world’s leading maritime economists, a long term colleague of Spinnaker’s and a regular participant in the work of the Maritime HR Forum.
Fred was also a seafarer and former head of Clarksons’ consultancy business. In the early part of his career he spent a couple of years in Italy doing voluntary work and was a fluent Italian speaker
Fred not only had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the shipping industry, with particular emphasis on the markets, but was able to impart that knowledge to conference audiences and confused hacks with a clarity and humour that made him much in demand both as a conference speaker and as a sure source of good information for any journalist struggling with a story.
He will be very greatly missed by us and by his many friends in the industry.
