UNION WIN

The National Union of Seafarers of India has won its court case with the Indian National Shipowners Association which had asked the Bombay High Court to set up a tribunal to adjudicate in disputes between shipowners and seafarers.

The court reaffirmed a 2006 court order saying that the shipowners had to negotiate with the NUSI as the largest union.

This is the best gift the Indian seafarers have got on the eve of the first ever International Seafarers Day, Abdulgani Serang, general secretary of NUSI said when the news was announced. The judgment has been confirmed by the Supreme Court.
