We catch up with Liam Daly, one of our technical maritime recruitment consultants.
Tell us about your specialism here at Spinnaker.
I specialise in helping technical/marine professionals for shore-based roles across the globe. I also have experience of working on Executive Searches for senior technical roles. Over the past year I have built up a fantastic network of both candidates and clients.
The eternal question… how’s the market at the moment?
Good question! I would say positive at the moment. I’ve had many clients reaching out to me to help them with roles that they are struggling to fill or just want an agency to help them from the start. The UK and Singapore have been the most active markets and I don’t see this changing. Very much is focused on safety, connected to regulations that will be coming into place in 2020.
Are you finding that there are certain candidates who are hard to find?
There has been a shortage of superintendents across the globe and especially in Singapore. Many clients there do prefer individuals who already have Singapore Permanent Residency, as the government are cracking down the ability to gain this citizenship. Let’s hope this does change as there are many superintendents from overseas who will relocate and are at a high standard.
What’s the most rewarding thing you’ve achieved at Spinnaker?
Since joining Spinnaker in April 2017 I have placed candidates with a number of companies that we had not placed with for a few years, but most importantly new relationships have been formed.
What do you see as trends and insights for 2018?
I believe that executive searches will continue to rise due to our reputation in the market for this area. This is now with Jon Chaplin who is now heading up the division. I see more roles coming out of Asia as many individuals I speak with are looking to retire, and a new generation will be coming in.
Tell us about your top positions you’re working on at the moment.
Where do I start! I’m busy in the UK, Singapore and Manila. We have a great opportunity to work with a Ship Owner as a Fleet Manager in London. We also have a Head of Procurement role working for a shipping organisation based in the South East of England.
