Signal support for seafarers

A new Sailors' Society campaign is calling on people to show their support for seafarers this World Maritime Day, Thursday 25th September. Supporters the world-over will be dressing head to toe in the colours of their country's ensign flag as part of the charity's Signal Your Support campaign.

Sofie Bennett, Sailors' Society Events Manager, said, "With over 90% of our everyday goods transported by sea, we're hoping Signal Your Support will encourage people to find out more about merchant seafarers whilst having a bit of fun.

"We always have incredible support from the shipping industry and hope the refreshing twist on dress down will inspire even more people to join in, spread the word and raise some funds for our life-changing work. We're offering a luxury hamper to the most retweeted team picture, so remember to capture your efforts on camera!"

An ensign is a flag, often the same as national flag, which merchant vessels are required to fly when entering and leaving a harbour or when sailing through foreign waters. Funds raised from the campaign will go towards the charity's life-changing services including counselling and emotional assistance, educational grants for serving and intending seafarers, and community building projects.

The charity is asking £3/$5 from everyone taking part to help seafarers and their families. You can donate at sailors-society.org/events/signalyoursupport or UK residents can donate by texting SIGN04 £3 to 70070. For a chance of winning a luxury hamper tweet your Signal Your Support team picture #signalyoursupport @sailorssociety.

Sailors' Society operates in 47 global ports and 22 countries transforming the lives of the world's 1.5 million seafarers and their families. The charity offers welfare support, education, and relief from poverty and distress; meeting the needs of seafarers in port, at sea and at home.
