We read recently that Merchant Navy officers have been ranked seventh in a 'top 10' of highest earning occupations in the UK.

The league table, compiled by the Office for National Statistics, based the ranking on a survey of annual hours and earnings, and sample PAYE payments which provided a gross salary.

Number one in the list was chief executives (due to all those benefits, bonuses and share options!), followed by airline pilots and flight engineers, then medical practitioners, marketing and sales directors, IT and telecoms directors, and company lawyers.

The Merchant Navy place is also shared by ship and hovercraft officers, and air traffic controllers – all of whom had salary rises of over 8% in the last year.

This shows that when it comes to high earning roles, transport is king.
