A LA CARTE

Pearson & Taylors classic book "Fractured French" wasn't intended to be the kind of French you could use to order a croquet monsieur, but a brief glance shows that it does contains plenty of phrases associated with our dear industry.

The idea behind the book was to take well known French phrases and translate them poorly but amusingly into anglais. Hence, "carte blanche" translates as "for God's sake take Blanche home" and "Louis Cinq" as "lost at sea". "De rigueur" translates usefully as a "two masted schooner" and "mal de mer" as "mother in law"

A personal favourite is "voici l'anglais avec son sang froid habituel" – "Here is the Englishman with his usual bloody cold"
