Spinnaker has recently jointly purchased Asdem Ltd, a long-established tanker industry training and claims consultancy, which is particularly known for its demurrage expertise.
The new partnership is between its new Managing Director Andrew Wilding, Spinnaker Global Ltd and Amol Deshmukh of Aeghiscorp Maritime Ventures. "It's a great combination," said Andrew Wilding, "bringing together a group of individuals with legal, business and seagoing backgrounds to preserve and build upon Asdem’s legacy. Its founder, Roger Sepkes, was particularly concerned to find successors who are as committed to service levels and an ethical approach as he is."
Andrew Wilding is a maritime lawyer who was previously a partner at law firm Stephenson Harwood before joining Asdem in Singapore, which he has run for the last 8 years. Phil Parry, Spinnaker's Chairman explained that he first became aware of Asdem many years ago when they were actively involved in oil industry recruitment. Parry always had an interest in the business because of its reputation and similarity to Spinnaker as the leader in a niche field and because of his own background as a maritime lawyer when he handled a large number of tanker demurrage backlog claims for clients. “Asdem was for many years the go-to place for demurrage recruitment as well as demurrage advice, mediation service and claims support, so it was a natural fit for us, especially now that Spinnaker’s HR Consulting division has a successful and growing training business.”
Amol Deshmukh based in Mumbai, was key to the establishment of Asdem's new Demurrage Claims Centre, which offers clients the opportunity to outsource their claims work to true experts who will give them the benefits of outsourcing with the feel of an in-house department. Capt Deshmukh previously sailed on oil and chemical tankers, was shipping claims manager at Scorpio Marine Management and, like the other Asdem shareholders, is also a qualified lawyer. Asdem has staff in the UK, Singapore, the Philippines, India and Thailand.
To see Asdem’s busy autumn schedule of conferences and training courses, including a barge seminar in Rotterdam and tanker demurrage forum in Athens, go to www.asdem.com.
We are particularly keen to promote Asdem’s two-day oil industry operations and chartering course in London on 12/13 October. It’s an extremely useful well-established course for operations staff, chartering and broking staff, claims staff and indeed anyone working for a tanker company who needs to understand the ships, the cargoes, the life of a voyage and gain a commercial understanding.
