4 Day Week Foundation to run another national four-day week pilot this Autumn

The 4 Day Week Foundation has announced they will run another national four-day week pilot in the UK this Autumn. Companies and organisations are being invited to sign up until Monday 22 September.

The Foundation has partnered with researchers at Boston College and the University of Sussex who will measure the impact of the trial. The six-month trial is scheduled to begin in November with trainings and workshops starting in late September.

Research has shown that business performance, productivity and the wellbeing of workers increased for the companies that participated in the last major pilot that took place in the UK in 2022. Research showed that at least 54 of the 61 companies that took part maintained the four-day week a year and a half later.

In July, South Cambridgeshire District Council became the first UK council to permanently adopt a four-day week for their 700 staff. After a 27-month trial, the council recorded faster planning applications, housing repairs and benefits processing, a 43% increase in job retention, happier staff and annual savings of almost £400,000.

This week, the Scottish Government published the results of their four-day week public sector pilot which showed that the workers and employers that took part are both thriving.

Joe Ryle, Campaign Director of the 4 Day Week Foundation, said

“With more free time, a four-day week gives people the freedom to live happier, more fulfilling lives.

“As hundreds of British companies and one local council have already shown, a four-day week with no loss of pay can be a win-win for both workers and employers.

“The 9-5, five-day week is a century-old model that no longer fits the way we live and work today. We are long overdue an update.”
