We are supporting a well-established international shipping company in the search for a Port Captain to join their team in the USA.
This role is responsible for overseeing safe, efficient, and commercially effective cargo operations across U.S. ports, acting as a key operational link between vessel operations, chartering, port stakeholders, and service providers.
Existing unrestricted U.S. residence and work authorisation required.
A willingness to travel around north, central and south America is essential.
Responsibilities
- Oversee voyage execution in line with company objectives and contractual obligations
- Attend cargo operations including loading and discharging activities
- Provide operational guidance on cargo handling, stowage planning, and cargo care matters
- Respond to vessel, operator, and chartering enquiries relating to cargo operations
- Ensure cargo operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in an environmentally responsible manner
- Protect the company’s commercial and operational interests at all times
- Support vessel operators with day-to-day operational guidance and troubleshooting
- Inspect port facilities, cargo-handling equipment, and vessel holds, including grain cleanliness inspections
- Advise internal stakeholders on local port developments, regulatory changes, and operational risks
- Support the Chartering team with technical input on stowage and cargo care
- Negotiate with port vendors and service providers to ensure cost-effective service delivery
- Monitor and authorise operational equipment purchases in line with budget controls
- Review and help improve internal operational procedures and best practices
- Build and maintain a strong network of industry contacts across relevant ports
- Share operational knowledge and mentor junior team members where required
Requirements
- Chief Officer or ex-Master Mariner background
- An interest in moving into a Port Captain role
- Ability to travel around north, south and central America.
- Strong experience managing cargo operations within U.S. ports
- Solid understanding of dry bulk cargo handling, stowage planning, and cargo transportation
- Experience attending vessels and overseeing loading/discharge operations
- Commercial awareness with the ability to balance operational efficiency, safety, and cost control
- Strong communication, organisational, and IT skills
- Able to work effectively within an international, multicultural team
- Proactive, solutions-focused, and comfortable making operational decisions
- Existing unrestricted U.S. residence and work authorisation required
