Vetting & Clearance Superintendent – London
We are working with a major international energy company seeking an experienced Vetting & Clearance Superintendent to join its London-based shipping team.
The successful candidate will help manage the risks associated with the carriage of hydrocarbons by third-party vessels. This will involve assessing vessels, owners, technical managers, terminals and contractors to ensure they meet the company’s marine assurance and operational standards.
This opportunity would suit a Master, Chief Officer, Chief Engineer or Second Engineer with experience aboard oil and gas tankers. Previous shore-based experience is preferred, although experienced senior officers looking to move ashore may also be considered.
Key responsibilities
- Perform vetting, screening and clearance assessments for oil, gas, chemical and dry-bulk vessels and terminals.
- Assess vessel owners, technical managers, terminal operators and ship-to-ship transfer contractors against relevant standards.
- Evaluate vessels and technical managers being considered for time-charter business.
- Review vessel inspection reports and process vessel and location clearance requests.
- Support terminal, ship-owner and contractor assessments.
- Provide marine assurance advice to chartering, operations, logistics, terminal and wider shipping teams.
- Help ensure marine assurance policies and procedures are applied consistently across the business.
- Lead and review marine operational risk assessments.
- Support management-of-change processes, incident reporting and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate information within marine assurance systems and applications.
- Liaise with vessel owners, technical managers, terminals, contractors and internal stakeholders.
Essential requirements
- Seagoing experience as a Master, Chief Officer, Chief Engineer or Second Engineer aboard oil and gas tankers.
- Relevant Deck or Engineering Certificate of Competency.
- Strong technical knowledge of tanker and marine operations.
- Good understanding of international maritime legislation and accepted industry practices.
- Knowledge of operational risk-assessment techniques.
- Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Good IT capability and confidence working with marine assurance systems.
- Previous shore-based experience is preferred.
- Candidates must already have an unrestricted right to work in the UK, as visa sponsorship is not available.
Desirable experience
- Knowledge of OCIMF standards, including SIRE, BIRE, TMSA or MTMSA.
- SIRE Inspector accreditation.
- Experience of vessel vetting, terminal assessments or marine assurance.
- Bow-tie risk-assessment modelling.
- Chartered status.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis or project-planning processes.
Location and working arrangements
- Based in London (hybrid – one day home)
- Up to 10% travel may be required.
