BARRISTERS love a good argument, but usually you know that what you’re hearing is a biased view. After all, they’re paid to represent their clients’ interests. The London Shipping Law Centre has gathered together four barristers from Essex Court Chambers to give us their views (see, unusual isn’t it – ‘their’ views) on The Gulf and the Straits of Hormuz.

Iran is developing a nuclear bomb. Israel is threatening to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities. Iran warns that it can and will close the Straits of Hormuz. All pretty scary stuff really. Even Jack Bower might not be able to stop that lot.

Flippancy aside, what would all that mean for the shipping industry? Looking at the lessons learned from the Iran-Iraq War, Roderick Cordara QC, Jeffrey Gruder QC, Jern Fei and Amy Sander will discuss the legal implications of closure of the Straits of Hormuz (or even a renewed Gulf Conflict) with particular focus on marine insurance, force majeure and frustration and indeed the legality of any closure of the Straits in international law.
