AN amazing £51,000 was donated to shipping’s OSCAR Campaign last Thursday during shipping’s first industry-wide trading day. This brings the total raised by shipping for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children’s seas and oceans themed unit to over £440,000 and within reach of our £500,000 target.

The idea was to trade a virtual ship, the M/V OSCAR, and to insure it, finance it and so on. In other words, to appeal to all sections of the shipping industry to get involved and donate as a community. The day was promoted widely by Great Ormond Street Hospital itself as well as Spinnaker, Oldendorff, ICAP, Platou, Braemar, YMP, SPNL, LSLC, Shiptalk, WISTA, PYNDA, Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and probably others who we are rudely forgetting to mention.

A huge thank you to them and to all of you who donated. If you haven’t yet seen the M/V OSCAR she is in port at http://www.oscartradingday.org and if you’re tempted to top up the total you can pledge on the website or email mailto:[email protected]

Donations were generously given by both companies and individuals across the industry: shipbrokers, lawyers, industry bodies, underwriters, insurance brokers, marine investigators, ship registry, P&I, claims consultants, bankers, shipowners and shipmanagers. As Chair of the OSCAR Campaign and father of Oscar, I am being constantly humbled and touched at the industry’s response.

Thank you
