new year new leaders

New Year, new leaders – make 2020 the year for investing in your people

For most of us the turn of a new year prompts personal and professional reflection and forward focus. It is therefore timely that as employers, we collectively do the same.

Acknowledging the main successes for your business in 2019 while defining what you hope to achieve in 2020 is likely to be underpinned by a recurring theme of ‘change’. The world is changing around us, but are your people changing with it?

The power of people

Periods of organisational change provide the perfect opportunity to develop your managers and employers. People are powerful. They can often be the difference between success and failure – so making sure they are equipped to deal with the challenges of the year ahead will be critical for success.

Spinnaker offers a leadership development programme which focuses on participants gaining improved self-awareness – recognising the benefits and risks of personality style, identifying leadership strengths and challenges, understanding how to mitigate risk and learning how to motivate and get the best from people. It’s not about putting people into management style boxes and making everyone operate in the same way – we promote diversity of thought and action. Providing participants with a variety of tools to choose from (based on their own preferred ways of working) supports them in becoming a great manager in their own right.

Behavioural change

Our leadership programme has been rolled out to nearly 200 shipping professionals since its launch in 2016. Approved by the IMarEST and developed with our partner t-three, these programmes are designed to deliver sustainable behavioural change through a personal and participative programme delivered across 3 key stages:

  • Pre-programme personality profiling (using Facet5) with one to one feedback;
  • Two day workshop; and
  • Follow on coaching sessions.

Open programmes – ideal for small companies or individual delegates – are run regularly with workshops taking place in London and Singapore. The programme can also be delivered in house, ideal for larger roll-out requirements and with the potential to be tailored to your corporate values and needs.

Annual conference

Senior leaders and HR professionals can take time to reflect and invest in their people management strategies overall by attending the Maritime HR Conference taking place in London this May. The established 2 day event draws delegates from around the globe, providing opportunities to network with other maritime HR professionals, keep up to date with industry practice and take inspiration from people solutions outside of maritime.
