GreenSeas Trust’s plastic recycling initiative launched at one of Britain’s busiest transport hubs.

People passing through St Pancras International are being encouraged to stop plastic pollution at source, following the launch of a striking new recycling initiative.

The installation marks the 25th BinForGreenSeas to be launched by marine conservation charity GreenSeas Trust. It offers a unique opportunity to encourage responsible recycling and raise awareness of the connection between everyday waste and ocean health.

The charity’s network of UK bins diverts over 1 million plastic bottles each year from entering our rivers and seas.

The recycling bin funded by City Bridge Foundation was awarded to Camden Council. It was officially opened on 28 July by Mayor Patricia Leman and Fazilette Khan MBE, Founder Trustee of GreenSeas Trust.

Patricia Leman said: “This innovative initiative from the Green Seas Trust shows how one small action undertaken by many can make a meaningful difference in tackling plastic waste internationally. It also reflects Camden’s commitment to reducing waste and making it easier for everyone to take positive action for the environment.

Therefore, I urge all travellers, commuters and shoppers passing through St Pancras to take a few moments to recycle any plastic bottles in the striking Green Seas Trust recycling bins.”

Fazilette Khan MBE, Founder Trustee of GreenSeas Trust, said: “Plastic pollution doesn’t start at the coastline. It starts in our towns, cities and transport hubs. A plastic bottle dropped in a city street can be carried by the wind into drains and waterways before eventually reaching the sea.

St Pancras International gives us an incredible opportunity to reach millions of people with a simple message: every bottle recycled is one less bottle that can pollute our environment. Small actions, repeated by millions of travellers, can make a real difference.”

Plastic bottles remain one of the most common forms of litter found in the UK’s waterways and on its coastline. By placing highly visible recycling units in busy public spaces, GreenSeas Trust aims not only to increase recycling but also to encourage people to think about where their waste ends up and the impact it can have on wildlife and the marine environment.

Since launching the project in 2019, GreenSeas Trust has installed bins in locations including Margate, Cardiff, Tyneside, Holyhead, Weymouth and Canary Wharf, as well as internationally in Qatar.
