As part of our 30 Under 30 initiative, we’re celebrating the next generation of leaders shaping the future of the maritime industry. Next up is Hollie Black, Head of R&D and Deputy Head of PMO, and a standout emerging talent driving innovation at the intersection of research, technology, and maritime safety.
Hollie plays a pivotal role within her organisation, leading research and development projects while supporting project governance across the business. Known for her precision and people leadership, she manages complex initiatives, evaluates emerging talent, and ensures projects are delivered with both technical excellence and strategic focus.
Over the past 12 months, Hollie has taken on significant responsibility as Project Manager for a major 1.5-year global research project in partnership with the International Maritime Rescue Federation and funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The project focuses on advancing maritime search and rescue systems, placing her at the centre of critical, real-world industry impact. Alongside this, she has stepped into the role of Deputy Head of PMO, supporting oversight of multiple projects and strengthening delivery across the organisation.
Her contributions also extend to industry-leading thought leadership, having played a key role in the Inmarsat Maritime Future Safety Reports over the past three years, most recently as Project Lead. Complementing her professional work, Hollie is soon to complete her PhD at the University of Strathclyde, specialising in machine learning within the human element of maritime safety, a highly relevant and forward-looking area of expertise.
What sets Hollie apart is her mindset. She brings a rare combination of intellectual curiosity, confidence, and a willingness to take on challenges beyond her experience level. Her ability to lead, innovate, and deliver at such an early stage in her career reflects both her technical capability and her natural leadership potential.
Despite the challenges often associated with being both young and a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Hollie has established herself as a respected expert, recognised for her knowledge, credibility, and impact. Her journey is a testament to resilience, ambition, and the value of backing talent with both responsibility and opportunity.
With a clear trajectory toward senior leadership, Hollie represents the future of maritime innovation, combining research, technology, and human-centred thinking to shape safer, smarter systems across the industry.
