40ft Containers Wanted!

shipping containers

Spinnaker are delighted to be helping London Youth Rowing (LYR) in their search for two 40ft containers for their new pontoon at London’s Olympic Park. We’re shouting out for help from our shipping friends.

LYR work with 60 schools in London and use rowing “as a tool to motivate disconnected young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to find their value in society and empower them to find their path to achieve their potential and have pride in what they can achieve. In short, to develop successful, determined, active young people.”

This is not just about getting youngsters on the water, but about connecting them with industry and building teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills.

When the new Olympic Park site is up and running, it will be in use 7 days a week., LYR are seeking partners to help them deliver the facilities to be able to use this site. The containers are a huge part of this.

If you are able to help in any way with knowledge, logistics, container sales or donations, fundraising …anything at all, please email Andy Triggs Hodge OBE at LYR ([email protected]) or our own Phil Parry here at Spinnaker ([email protected]).

Benchmarking Crew Wages

Spinnaker are delighted to have published the 9th Seafarer Daily Wage Cost Report.

This report includes daily wage information of maritime careers including seafarers working on vessels including bulk carriers, LNG, LPG and cruise ships and is made up of data from 47 companies, 96 nationalities and over 250,000 seafarers.

The reports calculate the cost of filling a berth on a vessel using values for both salaried

and unsalaried (paid only whilst at sea) seafarers with varying rotation patterns.

This daily wage cost can easily be multiplied up to provide monthly or annual pay figures.

Spinnaker are also able to carry out further analysis based on this daily wage cost data such as:

  • Targeted peer group benchmarking
  • Ship manager or ship owner reports
  • Summary reports for senior or junior officers

Phil Parry, Chairman of Spinnaker, explains that “Benchmarking enables people to understand how to plan budgets and demonstrate to their staff, and to their staff’s unions, that they are paying fairly”.  He added “Benchmarking is not necessarily about paying the most, or paying the least, it is enabling people to understand where they are paying relative to the marketplace”.

The full report is available exclusively for participating members of the Seafarer Employers’ Association. If you would like to know more about joining and accessing this data, please contact Helen McCaughran and Monique Turner at [email protected] or call +44 (0) 1702 481 643

The Spinnaker Maritime People & Culture Conference 2022

hr conference

Once a year, maritime HR and crewing professionals from across the world meet in London at the Spinnaker Maritime People & Culture Conference to discuss the timeliest issues for the industry.

Now in its 14th year the event welcomes over 200 delegates from 18 countries globally.

People are very much at the heart of the Conference. In previous years delegates have listened to CEO panels discuss how they manage the age gap (and subsequent ‘culture gap’) between senior staff and younger recruits, or how they are tackling what we shall politely call Maritime’s ‘diversity issue’ is refreshing, encouraging and reassuring. CEOs of shipowners, shipmanagers, P&I clubs – they’re having the same issues as everyone else, and it’s inspiring to hear how they are handling the hottest topics in the industry. It’s also heartening for them to ask ‘What are you doing about it in your companies?’ – and that’s where the Spinnaker Maritime People & Culture Conference is very much an open forum for discussion.

Every session concludes with Q&A’s so that everyone can have their say. That way, it’s not just the speakers who are discussing how they run things, but other maritime HR professionals too. It’s what makes the event different. Whether shore-based or crewing, it’s an essential platform for the ‘people people’ of maritime to have their say. And once discussions have been had, that’s how change starts. You never know just how you might get inspired.

The 2022 Spinnaker Maritime People & Culture Conference takes place in London on the 26th and 27th May.

Topics for discussion include Agile Working, Remuneration, Flexible Working, ESG, Attraction & Retention.

Members of the Maritime HR Association are eligible for a free delegate space. If you are not a member, tickets can be purchased at https://spinnakerconference.eventbrite.co.uk
