The Maritime London Officer Cadet Scholarship celebrates its’ 30th Anniversary

celebrate

2022 marks the 30th anniversary of a seafarer officer cadet scholarship scheme that has raised over £3m in charitable funds to support over 100 young people through their cadet training.

The Maritime London Officer Cadet Scholarship (MLOCS) is run on an entirely voluntary basis by a Board of Trustees, which includes Spinnaker’s Chairman Phil Parry, and with Maritime London providing the secretariat.

The scholarship, initially known as the Lloyd’s of London Officer Cadet Scholarship and the brainchild of Jonathan Jones, was renamed in 2002, to reflect the contribution to funding of the scholarships made by the wider maritime services industry in the City.

MLOCS enables cadets to study at leading nautical training colleges and at sea, to qualify as deck, engine and electo-technical officers, with each scholarship being funded by a named corporate sponsor. The scheme is also supported by donors who identify with MLOCS objectives but do not sponsor a particular cadet.

Oliver Bailey, a current MLOCS cadet sponsored by Gard, said: “It is really a great way to start a maritime career. The cadetship gives you practical skills and experiences which I think many employers will find highly valuable, whether you want to work at sea or on shore”.

The MLOCS cadet cohort comprises of eight cadets presently, with three of them having started their training in January 2022, and with four cadets nearing the end of the cadetships.

Current sponsors include Campbell Johnston Clark (CJC), the International Underwriting Association (IUA), Thomas Miller, Clearwater, Gard, Wallem, Ince, North P&I and Steamship Mutual.

To mark its 30th anniversary, Maritime London Office Cadet Scholarship will hold a reception for current and potential sponsors, as well as former and current cadets, on September 29th at the Watermen’s Hall.

If you are interested to sponsor a cadet and/or find out more about MLOCS please contact Olga Jaques [email protected] or Phil Parry [email protected]

Develop your talent with Spinnaker’s maritime leadership development programme

maritime leadership development

According to Spinnaker research, only one-fifth of maritime industry employees believe that their employers develop their people well or promote those with the best management aptitude.

We all know that effective leadership creates a positive impact on team members in both performance, productivity, behaviour and morale.

With this in mind, Spinnaker have designed a ‘leadership development programme’ for those working in the maritime industry.

The Spinnaker leadership training differs from other generic training programmes in that it is not only maritime specific, but also incorporates the personality profiling tool Facet5.

The leadership development programme is delivered in 3 distinct stages:

  • Facet5 personality profile questionnaire and 1-hour personal feedback session;
  • 4 online workshop sessions;
  • 2 one-to-one coaching sessions.

The one-to-one coaching sessions are a key part of the programme as they not only help embed change at an individual level, but provide a confidential forum for the discussion of any work based challenges.

The programmes are now delivered virtually, which allows attendance from all 4 corners of the globe.

The next open programme begins on the 29th November 2022.

Benchmarking seafarer wages. An independent insight into how much to pay your crew

rope

On the 28th July Spinnaker will release the 10th annual Seafarer Daily Wage Cost Report.

This report includes daily wage information for seafarers working on vessels including bulk carriers, LNG, LPG and cruise ships and is made up of data from 47 companies, 96 nationalities and over 250,000 seafarers.

The reports calculate the cost of filling a berth on a vessel using values for both salaried and unsalaried (paid only whilst at sea) seafarers with varying rotation patterns.

This daily wage cost can easily be multiplied up to provide monthly or annual pay figures. Spinnaker are also able to carry out further analysis based on this daily wage cost data such as:

  • Targeted peer group benchmarking;
  • Ship manager or ship owner reports;
  • Summary reports for senior or junior officers.

Phil Parry, Chairman of Spinnaker, explains that “Benchmarking enables people to understand how to plan budgets and demonstrate to their staff, and to their staff’s unions, that they are paying fairly”. He added “Benchmarking is not necessarily about paying the most, or paying the least, it is enabling people to understand where they are paying relative to the marketplace”.

The full report is available exclusively for participating members of the Seafarer Employers’ Association. If you would like to know more about joining and accessing this data, please contact:

Shipping salaries in 2022

shipping boat in dock

The deadline for Spinnaker’s annual shore-based salary survey is fast approaching, and the Maritime HR Association team are busy collating and validating more than 32,000 lines of data provided by its members.

Yearly salary reports have become a must-have item for maritime businesses and have become more valuable than ever following the turmoil of the past 2 years.

Using trusted salary data as part of annual salary benchmarking allows business to:

  • attract top talent with competitive packages;
  • improve retention by rewarding fairly;
  • increase employee motivation;
  • stay aligned with market demand; and
  • underpin annual reviews of pay structures and levels.

This year’s shore-based salary survey is on track to be as robust and reliable as the last. In 2021 the reports reflected real time salary data for 32,000 employees from across 78 maritime employers (primarily shipowners, operators, ship managers and commodity/oil companies) in 101 countries.

“Spinnaker is proud to be able to provide participants to the survey the most reliable and comprehensive salary data in the shipping industry,” says Phil Parry, Spinnaker’s Chairman. “It’s particularly pleasing that numerous large shipping employers now habitually use the Maritime HR Association job codes as their internal terminology and use the data as their primary benchmarks for setting and reviewing salaries.”

The shore-based salary survey will soon be closing on the 15th July for 2022 and if you’d like to participate get in touch to find out how.

Meet Martin Crawford-Brunt, CEO of Lookout Maritime and chair of The Maritime People & Culture Conference Sustainability Panel

shipping boats

Martin Crawford-Brunt, CEO of Lookout Maritime and chair of our sustainability panel at the recent Spinnaker Maritime People & Culture Conference, has a passion for advancing sustainability, social and safety outcomes in the maritime industry which improve global prosperity without harming people or the planet.

The energy and digital transformations bring unprecedented opportunities and challenges for modern leaders and an increased need for more diverse teams. Building effective strategies to deliver sustainability/ ESG in the wider sense is extremely challenging. Individuals or executive teams who need to quickly grasp strategic industry issues and test options, in a safe setting without being judged, find our varied experience very valuable in understanding the landscape and perspectives of key stakeholders.

Lookout Maritime exists to accelerate your sustainability journey and impact in an informed, considered and joined-up way. In particular they focus on how to demonstrate improvement in the near term. They are agnostic of the approach and/ or technology selected and offer expert advice on options or scenarios.

Their independence means they are free to collaborate with other experts, companies, and sometime competing stakeholders to deliver the best outcomes for you.

Rather than producing a static report they deliver the most value by working with companies or individuals over an agreed period of time. This normally includes regular contact to suit the client in order to ensure the focus on this strategic area is maintained while allowing busy people to deal with key operational matters.

For those stepping into or preparing for CEO, C-suite or senior roles they offer coaching and mentoring which supports an increase in diversity. They act as an important sounding board for senior leaders who may be new to the maritime industry, supply chain or those given increasing accountability for sustainability outcomes.

Join Spinnaker for the 7th annual OSCAR Dragon Boat Race on Thursday 15 September 2022.

team photo

After taking a pause for 2 years due to the pandemic, we’re eager to make the 2022 OSCAR Dragon Boat Race bigger and better than ever.

The OSCAR Campaign has reached over £2million for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH). The OSCAR Campaign’s namesake is Oscar Parry, son of Philip. Oscar was treated for two types of leukaemia from age 3 to age 8. He had two bone marrow transplants – the second trialling an entirely new theory, experimental stem cell transplant, 5 brain haemorrhages. Now 21, Oscar is a living example of the value of bench-to-bedside research and treatment.

Hosted by Spinnaker, Chairman and Founder of the OSCAR Campaign Philip Parry said of the 2019 event: “Every year I am humbled by the shipping industry’s support and enthusiasm. This year we hoped to raise £150,000 to take us over the £2m fundraising total and the industry responded – we had 27 teams including ten shipowner teams. The race was won by Borealis who were also the top fundraisers so a huge thank you is due to Christoph Toepfer and Andrei Constantin. Other than my colleague Lauren Thipthorpe without whom I could not organise the event, it’s impossible to single out any one person as so many people have become integral to the event’s annual success. We are especially grateful to those companies who come back year after year and to our sponsors Blue Seas Adjusters, Oldendorff, RightShip and IG Group.”

The teams

The teams for the 2019 Race were: Spinnaker, Hill Dickinson, Swire Bulk, BDO LLP, LISCR, C Solutions, North P&I, Britannia P&I, CJC, Borealis Maritime, Shipowners Club, Thomas Miller, Union Maritime, Lomar Shipping, Golar LNG x4, A.M.Nomikos, Lloyds Register, Ince, IG Group x2, Beazley, Baltic Exchange, Corner Club, MSC Cruises.

How can I get involved?

We already have teams signed up for this year’s OSCAR Dragon Boat Race – would you like to be involved? Here’s how:

  1. Get a team together. You need ten rowers and drummer to keep everyone in time. No training needed! You don’t even have to have set foot in a boat before. The up-front cost is £500 to register, plus a pledge to raise £5,000 in sponsorship
  2. Sponsor the event. There are many opportunities to get your company’s brand seen by over 400 shipping people. From banners welcoming everyone at the venue to sponsoring the drinks, food, live band and boat flags, we have plenty of options.
  3. Come along for the party! There’s a bar, barbecue, live music, a classic car show and a great atmosphere – so it’s a fun day out even if you’re not on the water. All we ask for is a donation to Great Ormond Street Hospital, payable on the day.

Find out more about all these options by emailing Phil Parry at [email protected] or on +44 (0)1702 480142.
