WHILE it needs to be said that not all ex-pats are getting housing allowances these days, and a lot of companies have been phasing them out, they remain common in the Middle East, far more so than in, say, Singapore.

Salvage companies and other maritime employers can find out how well they pay their staff by joining the Maritime HR Forum to benchmark their compensation and benefits packages for their commercial, technical and corporate staff.

THE Maritime HR Forum is currently conducting a survey of its 43 member companies to establish benchmarks for pay rises and bonuses in 2011. Some 40% of companies froze salaries two years ago, 13% last year and it is estimated that only around 4% will do so this year…
